A buzzing city of culture
Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, lies just 70 km south of Helsinki on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland. This Baltic city is a fascinating blend of Eastern and Western European influences, and like most cities with an 800-year-old history, it is a patchwork of historic areas.
The city's pride and joy is without a doubt the medieval old town, Toompea, with its cobbled streets and colourful alleyways. Equally enchanting is the Kadriorg district, a throwback to the time when Estonia was ruled by Russian tsars. You can also check out the newer parts of Tallinn to get a glimpse of Soviet-era life, like the modern-day city centre at Vabaduse väljak (Freedom Square). The area around the old city wall in the lower part of town also has a series of lovely parks that are perfect for a stroll.
