A gem of northeastern Europe
Estonia is a small European nation which can sometimes be overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbours. You won’t want to underestimate it, though, as this charming region represents a fascinating blend of eastern and western culture.
It’s one of three countries known as the Baltic States, including Latvia and Lithuania, all with coasts along the Baltic Sea. Estonia also has a coast on the Gulf of Finland, opposite Finland’s capital Helsinki. Over 50% of Estonia is covered in lush forests.
Over the centuries, Estonia has been conquered and ruled by many other states and kingdoms. Estonian Vikings shaped modern borders in their battles with Norway, Sweden and Denmark. It’s been officially independent since 1918 but was occupied by the Soviet Union during the 20th century.
Modern Estonia, which reasserted its independence in 1991, is a blend of proud tradition and modern innovation. Folk songs and dancing are still popular pastimes here, so don’t be surprised if you see some displays on the medieval city streets.
Tallinn, Estonia’s capital, is a real hidden gem of eastern Europe. The medieval old town is one of the best-preserved of its kind in Europe, and as such is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can explore winding medieval streets and try both traditional and modern food here.
