Sweden's chic capital
Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is built on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges on Lake Mälaren, which flows into the Baltic Sea past an archipelago of over 24,000 rocky islands and islets. Besides the sleek designs and world-class nightclubs, this famously sophisticated city is also remarkable for its classic architecture, royal heritage, abundant green spaces and many waterways. Here you will find a wide selection of museums and attractions, most of which can be reached easily on foot or public transport within the city’s inner zones.
After its establishment in the 1250s, Stockholm rapidly grew to become the largest and most important city in Sweden. As the city was untouched by the World Wars, there are still many old buildings remaining from as far back at the 15th century, as can be seen in the medieval streets of the Old Town (Gamla Stan). The city’s strategic location also made it the site of many power struggles throughout the ages, which you can learn more about at places like the Vasa Ship Museum on Djurgården, an island that is home to many of Stockholm’s most popular attractions.
