Typical Norwegian village by the fjord

With its unique natural environment, Eidfjord is among Norway’s hidden gems. This area is characterised by steep mountainsides, mountain lakes, glaciers, deep river valleys and waterfalls.

Nestled between 1,900 metre (6,234 ft) peaks on the Hardangerfjord is the village of Eidfjord, the municipality’s main township and major cruise ship destination. The settlement dates back to the Iron Age and Viking era, and old burial mounds can be seen alongside the road at Hereid, a short walk from the village centre.

Another of the village’s popular attractions is the Hardangervidda Nature Centre, a modern museum showcasing Norway’s spectacular environment with a variety of interesting exhibits, including a panoramic movie that simulates a helicopter ride. The Hardangerjøkulen glacier, one of the largest in Norway, can also be seen from here.

Eidfjord also serves as a good starting point for the nearby Hardangervidda National Park and the Vøringfossen waterfall, just a short drive away.
