Historic and colourful neighbourhood
This is the area of Trondheim you’re most likely to recognise from postcards and travel photos. On the east side of the city is Bakklandet, the charming quarter where you’ll find an iconic row of old wooden houses in a kaleidoscope of colours – like something out of a themepark or folk museum.
First inhabited in the 1600s, this wharf area was originally a working class neighbourhood but now houses fashionable shops, bars, restaurants, guesthouses and cafes in buildings that have been lovingly restored after fires and years of decay.
From the city centre, the best approach to this colourful area of Trondheim is by walking over the Old City Bridge (Gamle Bybro), also known as the “Gate of Happiness” (Lykkens Portal). As part of this neighbourhood covers a hillside, Bakklandet also boasts the world’s first bicycle lift, called “Trampe”, to help cyclists up the steep Brubakken hill.
