Extensive collection of fine art
The Swedish National Museum of Fine Arts (Nationalmuseum) was founded in 1792 and exhibits an impressive collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures acquired mostly from the Swedish Royal Family, as the original name Kungliga Museet ( Royal Museum) suggests.
The present building, designed by the German architect Friedrich August Stüler, was inaugurated in 1866. Along with works from world famous painters, such as Rembrandt and Dürer, it displays the masterpieces of many prominent Swedish artists, along with an impressive collection of porcelain and some pieces of modern art. The museum is located on the peninsula of Blasieholmen in central Stockholm.
