An architectural marvel connecting Denmark and Sweden
In 1999, the Øresund Bridge (Øresundsbron) was opened for traffic, connecting the two large metropolitan areas of Malmö in Sweden and the Danish capital, Copenhagen over the Øresund Strait. It also connects the road and rail networks of Scandinavia with those of mainland Europe. Covering a stretch of nearly 8 km (5 mi), the bridge is the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe.
The structure itself is an impressive architectural feat and well over 60,000 people traverse it daily. The bridge starts from the Swedish coast to the manmade island of Peberholm, where traffic is directed to an undersea tunnel that ends on the island of Amager in the outskirts of Copenhagen. The toll for driving across the bridge is paid at the toll station on the Swedish side.
