Long and storied past
Since its humble beginnings as a fort in the 12th century, the castle of Nyköping has been occupied by dukes, earls and kings and is perhaps best known as the grisly endpoint of the infamous power struggle in 1317—the Nyköping Banquet, in which two dukes were lured to the castle by King Birger under the pretence of a reconciliation feast, only to be imprisoned and starved to death in the dungeon. Today, however, visitors can be sure to find food in the restaurant in the Queen´s Cellar.
