Ancient and iconic castle
At more than 800 years old, Kalmar Castle is an impressive historical landmark in the southeastern city of Kalmar. The castle was originally erected as a tower in the 12th century to safeguard against piracy and other attacks from sea. As Kalmar´s harbour grew, the castle and the surrounding township became an outpost at the final frontier between Sweden and Denmark. As a result, it was chosen as the setting for peace talks, and in 1397 the Union of Kalmar was signed here, joining the Nordic countries under a common ruler.
Today, the castle is a nice place to visit to learn about the history of the area, and tour through various rooms in the castle that are set up to represent how they may have looked during various times throughout the castle‘s long history.
In addition to other temporary exhibits and a summer children‘s programme, Kalmar Castle also features a café and restaurant for visitors.
