Norway's first national park
Established in 1962, Rondane National Park is Norway’s oldest national park and lies nearby two other mountain areas, Dovre and Jotunheimen. There are 10 peaks here that reach over 2,000 metres (6,500 ft), and the overall altitude of the park is quite high… even its lowest point sits roughly 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) above sea level!
With few trees in the high plateau, the park is an important habitat for herds of wild reindeer. Archaeological findings here indicate that nomadic hunter-gatherers lived off the reindeer as far back as 3,500 years. As a special measure to protect the reindeer herds and their grazing area, the park was enlarged in 2003. Musk oxen and moose can also be spotted in this area.
Popular activities in Rondane include hiking, biking and cross-country skiing, and the park is known for its well maintained trails. Information about the park or guided excursions in the area can be found at tourist centres in the communities of Otta, Folldal, Ringebu, Vinstra, Bjorli or Dombås.
